Tao Xiang received his Bachelor Degree in science from Tsinghua University in 1984, Master Degree in physics from Tsinghua University in 1996, and PhD from the Institute of Theoretical Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1990. He worked as a research associate successively at Oxford University, Warwick University and Cambridge University, United Kingdom from 1990 to 1998. He was appointed as a full professor by the Institute of Theoretical Physics, CAS in 1998, moved to the Institute of Physics, CAS in 2007. He served as the Director of the Key Laboratory of Condensed Matter Theory and Computation, CAS from 2010 to 2017. He is currently the Chief-Editor of "Chinese Physics Letters". He was elected as a Fellow of American Physical Society in 2011, Member of Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2013, and Fellow of the World Academy of Sciences in 2015.
His field of interest is condensed matter theory, emphasized on theoretical investigation of quantum phenomena of strongly correlated electronic systems. He is particularly interested in the study of theory of density-matrix and tensor-network renormalization group, pairing symmetries and mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity, Mott phase transition and quantum spin liquid.
