BAQIS Successfully Held Academic Advisory Board Meeting

BAQIS recently achieved a significant milestone with the successful convening of the Academic Advisory Board meeting on October 15th to 16th, 2023. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss the achievements of BAQIS over the past 5 years and provide valuable consultation and guidance for future development.


The meeting brought together a review committee of 9 esteemed experts from world-class universities and research institutions. The committee chair is David Aspens, a distinguished professor at North Carolina State University and member of the National Academy of Sciences in the United States. The members include Klaus von Klitzing, the recipient of the 1985 Nobel Prize in Physics, and former Director of Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research, Germany; Thors Hans Hansson, a professor at Stockholm University, Sweden, and member of the Nobel Committee for Physics; Yoshinori Tokura, a professor at the University of Tokyo, Director of RIKEN Center for Emergent Matter Science, and member of Science Council of Japan; Stuart Parkin, Director at the Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics, Alexander von Humboldt Professor at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg,and member of German National Academy of Science - Leopoldina, Germany; Leo Kouwenhoven, a professor at QuTech Institute, Netherlands; Haiqing Lin, a professor of Zhejiang University and member of CAS; Xincheng Xie, Chair Professor at Peking University and member of CAS; and Fuchun Zhang, Director of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Sciences (KITS), UCAS, and Academic Dean of the School of Physical Science and Technology at Shanghai Tech University.


Yingjie Yu, Deputy Mayor of Beijing, and Hui Liu, Deputy Director of Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission met with the experts of the Committee. BAQIS President Qi-Kun Xue and President Tao Xiang, along with other members of the executive team of BAQIS, hosted the site visit of the review committee. Division directors, research group leaders, and representatives of research staff attended the relative activities.  The 2023 Academic Advisory Board Meeting was organized and coordinated by the President's Office and the International Collaboration Department of BAQIS.


The experts of the Committee reviewed the written materials and listened to the overview report on BAQIS development. They also listened to the presentations on the research divisions’construction and on representative research progress. The experts visited relevant laboratories of BAQIS and held discussions with executive team members and research stuff. They provided suggestions for the future development of BAQIS.


Experts of the committee acknowledged BAQIS' effective institutional and mechanistic innovations as a new research organization. They praised the institute's important achievements in laboratory construction, internationalization efforts, etc. The experts emphasized the vital importance of providing sufficient freedom and stable support for fundamental scientific research to attain major scientific breakthroughs. They eagerly anticipate the institute's future development and its contributions to the field of quantum research.


This meeting is an important landmark for BAQIS to reflect on and chart the course for its future development. It also serves as a catalyst for further enhancing international openness and exchange of BAQIS.
