【Title】Teleportation: Hype and trust in quantum technology
【Speaker】 Hans-A. Bachor, Professor Emeritus at the Australian National University, Australia
【Abstract】Quantum technologies are now being developed in many places which exploit the science we have discovered in last century about atoms, photons, lasers and quantum optics. Science includes a thorough way to test facts, concepts and ideas for applications, to create trust by others in the data we produce and our predictions for new devices. At the same time we us hype to some degree in order to describe what might be possible. Too much hype can erode trust. The example here is teleportation. In this tutorial we will briefly explore the development of quantum optics. We will look at the promises made for the future and how to be optimistic about the future of quantum optics technology while maintaining trust in our own work, in science as a whole.
【Brief Bio】Hans-A. Bachor is Professor Emeritus at the Australian National University, an independent science consultant and presenter of public lectures and teaching programs in the areas of physics & science communication. He arrived in Australia in 1981 with a PhD from the University of Hannover in Germany, has established experimental quantum optics in Australia and created a widely known research team for quantum optics. He founded and was Director of ACQAO, a national centre of excellence to study atoms and light at the quantum level. This pioneering work has been continued by research teams in several countries led by colleagues he has trained and mentored. With many collaborators he explores options for future quantum technologies. He was an ARC Federation Fellow 2003/08, is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Sciences, OPTICA, the Institute of Physics (UK) and the Australian Institute of Physics. He received several awards including the Humboldt Research Prize, Harrie Massey Medal of the IOP/AIP and an Erasmus Mundus Fellowship (EU). He has published > 150 publications in professional journals with > 10,000 citations (Google Scholar 2026). His highest cited publication are the 3 editions of his textbook A guide to experiments in quantum optics H-A Bachor & T.C.Ralph , Wiley, 2019 (>1,500 cts).
