【Title】Quantum Key Distribution on Lossy Channels

【Speaker】

Professor Marco Lucamarini has been Chair of Experimental Quantum Communications at the University of York since 2020, where he leads a research group of approximately 20 members. He also serves as Co-Director of the York Centre for Quantum Technologies, spearheading multi-departmental initiatives and overseeing state-of-the-art laboratories at the University’s Institute for Safe Autonomy. With over 20 years of experience in quantum technologies, he is best known for his pioneering work on high-rate, long-distance quantum communications, enabling secure data transmission over standard optical fiber between geographically distant cities.

At the University of York, Professor Marco Lucamarini has secured substantial funding in the field of quantum technologies, serving as Principal Investigator on the University’s Strategic Investment Fund and as Co-Investigator on the UK EPSRC Research Hub for Integrated Quantum Networks. Prior to joining York, he held a senior research position at Toshiba Research Europe in Cambridge, where he played a pivotal role in establishing the UK’s first quantum network. He is an active member of ETSI and a former member of ISO and ITU-T, contributing to the standardisation of quantum technologies.

【Abstract】

Quantum key distribution (QKD) is the first quantum technology to achieve market readiness, promising ultra-secure communications. Despite its potential, QKD faces several challenges, with limited tolerance to channel loss being one of the most significant. This presentation explores the impact of channel loss on QKD and discusses potential strategies to overcome this critical barrier.
